how words hurt a child at nautilus teachings

only faith saved me
only faith saved me

i was lost in this world
full of shame and disgrace
you could see all the lies
written plain on my face
i was not like the others
i came from a place
where children are punished
just for taking up space
i walked in his shadows
all i could see was his face
and the worlds he last spoke
echoed in his place…
“girl you’ll turn out just like me
‘cause you come from my blood
no escapin’ the pull
from the dark side of life
you’ll walk in my shoes
and you’ll die in disgrace
‘cause there’s just no mistakin’
you’re a top bottom girl…”
i’ve been mixed
i’ve been shaken
i’ve been beat down with words
i’ve woken in darkness
and peered at your world
I’ve seen all the sadness
and i’ve felt all the pain
but i’ve pulled myself together
now i’m running through rain
and the words that you’ve spoken echo once again,
“girl you’ll turn out just like me
‘cause you come from my blood
no escapin’ the pull
from the dark side of life
you’ll walk in my shoes
and you’ll die in disgrace
‘cause there’s just no mistakin’
you’re a top bottom girl…”
i’ve walked all the hallways
which smell like death and defeat
i’ve looked into the empty eyes
and seen the filthy feet
the homeless, the shoeless
the travelers on this road
and i woke up and realized
they never carried a heavier load
I’m just making the right choices
being thankful for what i’ve got
knowing even though i carry your blood
a kin to you i am not
i walk in sunshine
feel the breeze upon my face
and i live in a world
full of love, peace and faith-
the words which now echo
in your shadow from your face
are
“girl you’re nothin’ like me
you’ve got style,
you’ve got grace
you walk in the knowledge
it’s time to find your place
and give back to the world
all the gifts you hold inside
i can’t hold you back
and i can’t break your stride
cause there’s just no mistakin’
you’re a top shelf girl.
